Empowering Africa’s Digital Policy Voices
Advancing inclusive, rights-based digital policies through collaboration, advocacy, and strengthened civic leadership across Africa.
Who We Are
The Digital Rights Alliance Africa (DRAA or the Alliance) is a pan-African, diverse coalition of formal civil society organisations (CSOs), human rights defenders (HRDs), media practitioners, lawyers and technology specialists in Africa that seek to champion digital civic space and counter threats to digital rights on the continent. The Alliance was jointly established in 2023 by the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) and the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA) to strengthen expertise and action by civil society in Africa to shape rights-based, enabling digital policies and counter threats to digital rights and internet freedoms across the continent. DRAA currently has members from 13 countries.
What We Do
Monitor & Research
Track digital restrictions, internet shutdowns, surveillance practices, and legislative trends.
Advocate & Litigate
Advance progressive digital policies through strategic advocacy and impact litigation.
Build Capacity
Strengthen civil society expertise through training, resources, and peer learning.
Shape Digital Norms
Engage regional and international institutions to influence rights-based digital governance frameworks.
“At the Digital Rights Alliance Africa, we pursue measurable and results-driven action by strengthening advocacy and strategic litigation capacity, advancing progressive digital rights frameworks across Africa, fostering civil society participation in digital norm-setting processes, and building awareness and partnerships that strengthen the continent’s digital rights ecosystem.”
